Cyberattack on UDE

UDE’s digital services are currently unavailable

The University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) has been the target of a cyberattack. The entire IT infrastructure has therefore had to be shut down and disconnected from the network. Central services such as PC applications, email and the fixed-network telephone system are not available. The University’s IT specialists are working at full speed to assess the damage and restore the systems. It is unclear how long this will take.

The attack on the IT systems took place at the weekend. After hackers got into the internal systems, they encrypted large parts of them and are demanding a ransom. University management has informed the relevant security authorities
and filed a report with the police. External specialists are also being consulted.

After an initial survey, all Microsoft Office applications, internal administration and email systems seem to have been affected. The telephone system is also out of service.
